Canvas Crew

Instructional Video

YEAR 2022

ELDT 6140 - Instructional Video Development
University of North Carolina Charlotte

The Canvas Crew video series consists of a series of demonstration/tutorial videos that are be published as open educational resources for faculty and students at any institution. The series can be used in its entirety as a playlist or individually for a more targeted learning approach. Each video will be between 60 - 120 seconds and demonstrate how to do a specific task on Canvas LMS.

The video series targets the cognitive domain by asking students to apply the use of a tool in Canvas by recalling the information presented in the video in connection to what their instructor is asking them to do. The overall purpose of the video series will be to demonstrate basic canvas discussion board tools including type, links, photos, videos, and attachments.

First, The Basics.

The first video in the series demonstrates how to locate and make a simple discussion board post in the canvas LMS system.

Embedding Photos.

The second video in the series demonstrates how to embed photographs, showing multiple approaches.

Creating Links.

The most popular video in the series demonstrates how to create a link and provides several best practices to consider.

User Experience Design

Users appreciate the easy to follow, highlighted cursor as it helps users understand and organize information faster and more efficiently. The Law of Proximity reminds us that users need a clear to follow guide to know what to look at, a necessity with the limited time for these short demonstrations.

The design attempts to be aesthetically appealing, as the Aesthetic-Usability Effect reminds us, users believe that visually appealing designs are more usable. Making using Canvas "look” super easy and friendly, users are more confident getting started themselves.

Thank you Ashley Stansell for your collaboration on this project.
