Accessible design is good design - it benefits people who don't have disabilities as well as people who do. Accessibility is all about removing barriers and providing the benefits of technology for everyone.

- Steve Ballmer

Ryland started their professional career as a print designer in Asheville, NC. After several years working in the industry, they began teaching graphic design in Concord, NC. With no formal education in education at the time, Ryland began to research teaching and learning methods. Soon after Ryland discovered Learner Experience Design. Learning Experience Design (LXD) is the process of creating learning experiences that enable the learner to achieve the desired learning outcome in a human centered and goal oriented way.

Ryland led the advertising and graphic design program at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College from 2019 to 2023. He guided a team of 5-8 instructors through a significant transition to online teaching during a pandemic, leading to increased interest in online graphic design courses.

In 2023, Ryland earned a Master's degree in Education with a focus on learning, design, and technology. While studying, Ryland worked with the Center for Teaching & Learning at The University of North Carolina - Charlotte on multiple projects. Currently, Ryland is an Instructional Designer at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, working in the eLearning & Faculty Development Department. Each semester, Ryland still gets to teach graphic design.

When Ryland is not teaching, they enjoy delving into their hobbies of film and digital photography. They often spend quality time with their son Atlas, exploring parks in the picturesque landscapes of North Carolina. Additionally, visiting exhibitions, museums, and arts centers is a favorite pastime, where Ryland can immerse themselves in the vibrant creative community.

Ryland is a problem solver, a designer, a creator, an educator, a father, a leader, a mentor, a mentee, and always happy to assist. Check out their work here on their website, and connect with them on Linkedin.
